On the afternoon of May 9, 1927, a tornado struck Poplar Bluff, destroying many buildings downtown. Ninety-eight people were killed, ranking it the 17th deadliest U.S. tornado, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (tied with Gainesville, Ga., tornado on June 1, 1903).
